The Creation & Importance of Gatun Lake in Panama

Gatun Lake is a massive artificial lake crossing through Panama between the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. It forms a major part of the Panama Canal, transiting ships for 33 km across the Isthmus of Panama.

The lake was created between 1907 and 1913 during the creation of the Gatun Dam. Gatun Lake, which is 26m above sea level, has an area of 425 km2 and stores 5.2 cubic kilometers of water. The water storage is used as a natural reservoir for the operation of the canal locks, supplied by the seasonal rainfall.

With the creation of Gatun Lake, many high hills became small islands, which nowadays are inhabited by a wide variety of plants, animals, and insects. Lago Gatun Fincas is located on one of these islands.

With only a few people living in Lago Gatun, the beautiful nature is being preserved, which gives the local character of Lago Gatun.

Lago Gatun Fincas, located in the heart of Gatun Lake, is where you can experience the best that the Gatun Lake area has to offer. Some of the best scenery, outstanding fishing spots, a wide variety of animals, impeccable lake views, amazing landscapes and hiking routes, local food, and nearby a small village, which will provide you with your daily necessaries. The nature of Lago Gatun Fincas keeps making an unforgettable impression to locals and foreigners.
